Sensory Rediscovery: French Art Meets Penang in ‘The Tree of Light’ Exhibition

Featured

GEORGE TOWN: In a groundbreaking move aimed at fostering international artistic collaboration, the Penang Art District (PAD) has joined forces with the French artistic team ONYO. Sponsored by Institut Français as part of the global Novembre Numérique initiative and Switch/Urban Republic, this innovative exchange program has garnered support from PETACE, the Embassy of France in Malaysia, and Alliance Française de Penang, with the goal of nurturing cultural and creative connections between Penang and France.

At the core of this collaboration lies the immersive art installation titled “The Tree of Light,” crafted by ONYO founders and esteemed French artists Charlotte-Amélie Veaux and Yann Garreau. This award-winning sensory experience invites participants to rediscover enchantment in the world through an innovative blend of sound, narrative, and ecological fable, liberating them from the dominance of screen-oriented reality.

“The Tree of Light” transcends being a mere art installation; it serves as a sensory rediscovery where sound transforms into a scene, a landscape, and a story about different life forms. The immersive experience incorporates a breathing exercise into the narrative, contributing to the general well-being and tranquility of participants, offering a unique form of immersive art therapy.

Inspired by contemporary literature exploring the relationship between humanity and the environment, “The Tree of Light” acts as a bridge, connecting participants with other living beings and encouraging them to transcend the concept of “Nature.” This experience seamlessly combines sylotherapy and meditation, ensuring a time of disconnection and well-being for participants.

As part of this exchange program, students from the School of Arts at USM participated in building the sculpture for the Tree of Light, guided and consulted by ONYO.

This project signifies a landmark in cultural exchange between Penang and France, representing a significant stride towards establishing a stronger international alliance in the field of art. With the backing of the Penang State Government and the Malaysia French Embassy, the program is a crucial initiative in creating a robust global connection in the arts.
