The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in Penang is currently in discussions with security agencies to examine several major security issues linked to the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. In an official Facebook post, PDRM stated that Penang police chief, Datuk Azizee Ismail, chaired a preliminary coordination meeting on the Mutiara Line LRT at the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters to review security aspects of the region’s first large-scale infrastructure project.
The meeting, according to PDRM, scrutinised multiple critical security matters concerning the project. The police expressed their appreciation for the initial briefing by Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) and underscored the need for precise coordination to ensure that security operations are not disrupted.
“PDRM has requested early notification of any construction activities near strategic locations and any project timeline changes that could have security implications,” the statement read.
The statement further confirmed that a risk assessment for the LRT alignment, particularly near critical premises such as district police headquarters, station houses, quarters and logistics warehouses, is being prioritised to ensure these perimeters remain secure. The police have also sought additional clarification regarding the structural design of the viaduct, its height, its distance from PDRM facilities, and its implications for sightlines, operational privacy, and patrol vehicle access.
“The layout of PDRM premises was also discussed, including the need to reassess security for sensitive areas like detention rooms and armouries, provide alternative emergency routes and ensure the smooth movement of patrol vehicles throughout the construction period,” the statement added.
To enhance coordination, PDRM proposed appointing a dedicated liaison officer and setting up a 24/7 communication channel to manage emergency issues and address matters related to construction.
PDRM thanked its headquarters, the Chief Government Security Office, the National Security Council, and MRT Corp for their commitment to public safety, stating its readiness to cooperate so the strategic project can proceed without compromising state security and public order.
The Mutiara Line LRT project entails a 29.5-kilometre alignment linking 21 stations, offering park-and-ride facilities, feeder bus services, and two main depots on the island. The route traverses several critical areas, including Penang International Airport, the Free Industrial Zone, George Town city centre, and Penang Sentral, as well as the Jalan Tengah, Bayan Baru, Sungai Nibong and Jelutong police stations.
