Malaysians Can Now Visit Iconic Memorials for Free – Celebrate National Heritage!

The Ministry of National Unity is encouraging Malaysians to visit 10 national memorials dedicated to national leaders and cultural icons, with free entry available throughout the year. This initiative seeks to make Malaysia’s political and cultural heritage more accessible to the public.

The memorials include sites honouring figures such as Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra and Tun Abdul Razak in Kuala Lumpur, Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba in Melaka, as well as notable locations like the P. Ramlee Birth House in Penang and Rumah Merdeka in Kedah.

According to a statement from the ministry, the programme aligns with the International Archives Week 2025 theme, ‘Arkib Boleh Diakses, Arkib Untuk Semua’ (Accessible Archives, Archives for All). It supports the government’s broader MADANI agenda to promote widespread historical awareness. “The initiative aims to bring history closer to the people, particularly the younger generation, and ensure national records and stories are accessible to all levels of society,” the ministry stated.

The ministry also reiterated its support for community archiving, including oral history projects involving the Orang Asli and indigenous groups in Sabah and Sarawak. Such initiatives, the ministry noted, are vital for constructing a more inclusive and representative national narrative. “Let us embrace the nation’s historical heritage, nurture a love for the homeland and strengthen unity through reflection on our shared past,” the statement added.

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang highlighted the role of the National Archives of Malaysia (ANM) as a “guardian of national memory”, underlining its importance in preserving records and integrating the stories of Malaysia’s diverse communities. “From the fight for independence to the ongoing journey of national integration, the archives are essential. Without them, history fades, identity blurs and unity weakens,” he said.

The ANM holds Category A Institutional Member status in the International Council on Archives (ICA), affording it access to international archival collaboration and discourse.
